How to boot Windows 7 from a USB flash drive
During the Windows 7 install fest I had the need to create a method to boot faster and install Windows 7, so the answer was boot from a USB flash drive (a.k.a. USB thumb/pen/flash drive).
And because it was not easy to find the answer I decided to post my recipe:
Assuming you have the machine capable to boot from at least 2GB USB flash drive:
Step 1: Format the Drive
The steps here are to use the command line to format the disk properly using the diskpart utility (I tried with the Windows interface but not work). “Be warned: this will erase everything on your drive if you don't follow the instructions”
- Plug in your USB Flash Drive
Open a command prompt as administrator (Right click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt and select “Run as administrator” - Find the drive number of your USB Drive by typing the following into the Command Prompt window:
diskpart
list disk
The number of your USB drive will listed. You’ll need this for the next step. I’ll assume that the USB flash drive is disk 1. - Format the drive by typing the next instructions into the same window. Replace the number “1” with the number of your disk below.
select disk 1
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=NTFS
assign
exit
When that is done you’ll have a formatted USB flash drive ready to be made bootable.
Step 2: Make the Drive Bootable
Next we’ll use the bootsect utility that comes on the Vista or Windows 7 disk to make the flash drive bootable. In the same command window that you were using in Step 1:
- Insert your Windows Vista / 7 DVD into your drive.
- Change directory to the DVD’s boot directory where bootsect lives:
d:
cd d:\boot - Use bootsect to set the USB as a bootable NTFS drive prepared for a Vista/7 image. I’m assuming that your USB flash drive has been labeled disk G:\ by the computer:
bootsect /nt60 g: - You can now close the command prompt window, we’re done here.
Step 3: Copy the installation DVD to the USB drive
The easiest way is to use Windows explorer to copy all of the files on your DVD on to the formatted flash drive. After you’ve copied all of the files the disk you are ready to go.
Step 4: Set your BIOS to boot from USB
This is where you’re on your own since every computer is different. Most BIOS’s allow you to hit a key at boot and select a boot option.

- XP Mode: Do you have legacy apps developed in Windows XP? No problem, you can run it in Windows 7

If you are like me, a not ordinary people looking for different ways to know places, here is a list of new ways to have a personal tourist guide, definitely great ideas, hope soon we can find more with info from Mexico: Talking Street, London Audio Walks, Sound Walk, this last one include running guides!! Imaging what can you do when this can incorporate GPS information, either through your cel phone or PDA, Wow! I Just can imagine amazing results, I will going to patent this idea jeje.

21062005: Sobre Ajax y mas
Hace apenas algunos días estaba hablando sobre lo que estaba haciendo Google con los Mapas Virtuales y nuestra propuesta y ya empezamos a tener en línea nuestras primeras pruebas como se puede ver aquí, pininos pero interesante y los más importante, vamos por ellos :).
Uno de los temas ahora que esta en boca de todos es Ajax Asynchronous JavaScript and XML , en donde lo interesante del tema es que además de ejecutarse el JavaScript, en el background se siguen ejecutando cosas y de esta manera la experiencia en el browser es diferente, siguiendo con el tema de los Mapas Virtuales y el Virtual Earth, es lo que se percibe cuando vemos el mapa y lo arrastramos para mover la ubicación por ejemplo. En realidad no es una tecnología nueva, mas bien es la integración de varias cosas, lo que si aun no entiendo es el porqué de tanto ruido alla afuera, estare pendiente.
