Places to visit in Mexico. (Continuation...)
Adding more places to my previous list.
Downtown:
Garibaldi, worldwide know for the Mariachi, is a beautiful place where you can go to ear Mariachi bands, if you go there you should visit the "Tenampa canteen" is the most typical canteen in Mexico, and if you feel like Mexican try the "pulque", which is a prehispanic drink. Some advices, try to not be there so late and always go with someone.
Museo del Templo Mayor (Templo Mayor Museum), although I comment something in my previous blog, I want to give more details. Is the archeological place next the cathedral, with its impressive architecture, boasts the remains of the ancient Aztec ceremonial grounds, the double Mexica temple where the most important gods were worshiped: Tláloc, God of Rain and Huitzilopochtli, God of Sun, as well as the Aztec monolith representing the goddess Coyolxauhqui.
Alameda Central, Path located near Bellas Artes Palace, This path is the most ancient and the busiest in México City's most traditional park. It has been a favorite since colonial times. Its name "Alemada" comes from the fact that poplars (or Alamos) were originally planted there. They have been substituted by ash trees which currently shade the park.
Coyoacan. A tourist area in the south of the city with strong colonial influence and bohemian atmosphere. In the central square, also called "Jardin Hidalgo" (Hidalgo Garden), you will find the Church of Saint John the Baptist, a Catholic church build in the sixteenth century and which should not be missed. Inside one of the chapels, there is a beautiful baroque altarpiece from the seventeenth century. To one side of the church is the Municipal House which belonged to Captain Hernan Cortes, the Spanish conqueror. In the center of the garden there is a kiosk with a stained-glass dome with the republican eagle in the center. It is a good option if you like walking and taking pleasure in this kind of things. Visit La Casa Azul (Blue house) is a museum where Frida Kahlo was born, lived and died together with Diego Rivera.
Xochimilco. Very unique place, is our Venice canals (well in the Mexican dimension of course). Enjoy a relaxing ride, full of colors, scents and music, by boarding a trajinera (square wooden boat) from Nativitas pier, which has many boats waiting to wend their way through the canals in order to visit the famous chinampas (floating agriculture fields) and the fantastic Isla de las Muñecas (Doll Island). If you visit Xochimilco toward the end of October during the celebration of the Day of Dead, I recommended that you go to the Cuemanco pier where you can see a performance representing Mexico's ancient legend: The legend of the Llorona (weeping woman), on a small island on the Tlitac Lagoon, reachable by trajinera. Xochimilco has been declared a cultural heritage, due to its exceptional natural characteristics. You can choose from two very enjoyable routes: a long, ecological one or the traditional shorter route.
More to come...
